Some Further History of New Brighton
Did you know that the Wallasey Coastline was the Pirate Capital of the North West of Great Britain? Before New Brighton was even born, the area was known as Black Rock and was plagued by Pirates, Smugglers and Fisherman. The Coastal regions are littered with Smugglers Tunnels that were used for moving Contraband and other stolen goods around the region. The area also has its Historic Legends including a few Ghost Stories and was a showcase to Britain in the Early 20th Century. So join us on a journey through Time and Learn about all the Hidden Secrets the Resort Holds.
There must be a few things harder to imagine than an ammunition dump by New Brighton’s pretty Vale Park, or smugglers and wreckers sneaking furtively across the sands on which you have probably sat for many a quiet hour when the weather is warm. This Enlightening Tour will take you on a journey through time. Embrace the Darkness and Join our Historian & Author for an evening of Historical Facts, Light Comedy and many Dark Tales.
Rising from the river near Liscard in Wallasey stands Magazine Village - a community which, before gunpowder had bestowed upon it an air of respectability, was known and denounced as 'Hell's Brow'.
Before the eighteenth century the Brow was isolated from the other areas of Wallasey by a treacherous mere, a wind-swept moor, and by Bidston Moss. For many years the only access to the village was by way of the shore. Due to its isolation the area attracted wreckers and smugglers. Often posing as simple boatmen and hard-working fishermen they lived in the Brow's squalid muddle of hovels. However, the vagaries of passing time transformed the little hovels into some of the most delightful and sought after cottages in Wallasey.
There is once again a feel good factor about our beloved seaside resort New Brighton, something that has been missing since the day it turned into a ghost town virtually overnight in 1969. A new facelift with healthy investment has seen the phoenix rise from the ashes once more. Whilst it still holds many of the values and ideas of a Victorian Seaside Resort, it has also been given a 21st Century facelift, ensuring that once again New Brighton is a popular seaside resort. That Hidden History is what you are about to learn on our Exclusive historic Tours.
Wallasey, like much of Wirral, is built on soft, sandstone rock, laid down long geological epochs ago when the area was at the bottom of a prehistoric ocean. Rumours abound concerning tunnels leading through the rock, some supposedly stretching as far as Wallasey Pool and then cross Bidston Moss to Continue in tunnels from Bidston beyond. They are said to have been used and expanded by the smugglers in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. You will also hear about the origins of ghost stories and how smugglers concocted stories to drive fear into locals. Join us and find out all the local legends of the many hidden Tunnels around the area.

About the Meeting Location
The Perch Rock Battery, often referred to locally as Fort Perch Rock, is situated near Wallasey on the northern corner of the Wirral Peninsula. It was one of many defence's erected around the English coast in case Napoleon should try to invade the country or plunder coastal towns and was completed in 1829 from plans made by Captain Kitson. Red sandstone used in the construction of the fort came largely from the Runcorn Quarries, and was floated down the river in sort of flats and unloaded when the tide was out. Other stone came from Claughton Quarries. The stone was so soft and had to be left to be weathered. The Battery covers about 4.000 yards. Accommodation was provided for one hundred men, and the fort was equipped with eighteen guns, these being positioned to cover Rock Channel, the entrance to the Mersey from the Irish Sea. The fort has never been involved in any fighting and in 1958 the War Office put it up for auction.
